Transferability refers to the conditions under which the University accepts credits from other post-secondary institutions. Applicability of credit toward a degree refers to the prerogative of the respective academic division to count specific credit toward a student’s degree requirements. Collegiate work will be considered for transfer credit from post-secondary institutions that are fully accredited by a regional accrediting association or nationally accredited institution who participate in Florida's Statewide  Common Course Numbering System.
How will my transfer courses be applied to an FIU degree?
  1. The Office of Undergraduate Admissions will evaluate the acceptability of total credits transferable to the University.
  2. Transfer credits will then be applied as appropriate to a student’s degree program. The authority to apply such credit to the degree rests with:
    1. The Transfer & Transition Services office for University Core Curriculum (UCC) requirements, and
    2. The Academic Department of the student’s major for upper division and prerequisite requirements.
Note: Some prerequisites may be included as part of the UCC.
How many credits will FIU accept?
A maximum of 60 lower division semester hours taken at a two-year or a four-year institution may be counted toward a degree at the University. A maximum of 30 upper division semester hours taken at a senior institution may be counted toward a degree at the University. Lower division courses in excess of 60 semester hours may serve to meet specific course requirements for an FIU degree, but credit hours represented by these courses will not reduce the number of credit hours to be completed at the University.
What’s the lowest grade that I can transfer in?

A grade of ‘D’ will be accepted for transfer credit, although it may not satisfy specific requirements. However, such a grade in coursework in the major field is subject to review and approval by the appropriate academic department.

Does FIU accept Military credits?
Yes. Credit earned for military experience/education will be transferred and evaluated in consultation with faculty based on the credit recommendations of the American Council on Education (ACE). Military students should contact the Transfer and Transition Services office for all  military credit related questions.
