1- Where are the University Learning Centers located?

The University Learning Centers are housed on both campuses. At the Modesto A. Maidique Campus (MMC), the University Learning Center can be found on the first floor of the Library (GL-120). At the Biscayne Bay Campus (BBC), the ULC is located on the first floor of the Academic One building (AC1-160)- next door to the Office of Admissions.

2- Do I need to be a registered FIU student to use the ULC?

Yes; however, there are a number of Reading and Learning Programs offered during our Summer Term for non-FIU students. In addition, there are some specialized workshops which may be open to the the general public.

3- Is the ULC primarily used by students who are doing poorly in class?

Absolutely not.  In fact, you may be surprised to learn that many of the students who use the University Learning Center have very good GPAs and are simply interested in sharpening their skills.

4- Do I have to be referred to the ULC by a professor or advisor?

No, all students are welcomed with or without referrals.

5- Do you offer tutoring in other areas in addition to Reading and Mathematics? 

Yes, the Reading Lab offers an extensive tutoring program to improve study skills.  In fact, many juniors and seniors - and even some graduate students - have signed up for our study skills programs.  Our Math lab offers tutoring in all core statistics courses.  Also, don’t forget that we can refer you to other campus units which may be able to assist you in other areas.

6- What can I do at the ULC to earn extra credit?

Your professor must tell you exactly what he or she expects you to accomplish at the ULC  in order to earn extra credit.  In any case, our policy requires that a tutor reviews your work and signs a session form.

7- Do you have evening or weekend hours?

The ULC has flexible office hours to meet the needs of students just like you.  The ULC is open Monday - Friday and on evenings. Click on regular hours for our posted hours of operation.

8- How can I make my appointment?

You can make your appointment in person or by calling the ULC at either campus.   MMC 305 348-2180 or BBC 305 919-5927

9- What if I can’t make it to my appointment?

The ULC policy is that you must call and cancel your appointment 24 hours in advance whenever possible.  If you fail to cancel your appointments repeatedly, you risk losing Center privileges.  Remember, canceling your appointment in advance ensures that we can accommodate other students.

10- I have to take the CLAST test; can the ULC help me to prepare for this exam?

Yes! The ULC maintains an extensive collection of resources to assist students who are preparing for the CLAST exam. In addition, for those who sit the exam at FIU, we generate a useful document called the CLAST Analysis which can help you take the guess work out of further preparation.
